The ice skates are made of leather. Leather can often be a little stiff at first and usually gets softer with age as it is moved and the ice skates are used.

Regarding the sharpening, as stated in the product details there is the "factory" sharpening. If you click on "Blade sharpening:" you can read that "This sharpening may not meet the expectations of the most experienced skaters."
