Serious and professional cross country skiers can be almost obsessive about selecting the right iron and glide wax for their skis, often applying a fresh layer of glide wax each time they ski. On the other hand, many beginners and recreational skiers rarely, if ever, apply any wax to their skis. A balanced approach between these two extremes is ideal and optimal for most skiers.

There are essentially two types of glide wax for cross-country skis. A hot wax that must be applied with a hot iron at the correct temperature. This type of glide wax is very durable and can last most of the season for occasional skiers. Then there is the “everyday wax” that can be applied on top of the hot wax before you take your skis out on the slopes.

If you are new to cross country skiing, don't be alarmed or worry about waxing your skis daily. Don't be misled. The right ski glide wax can provide some extra speed, but it is nothing compared to the impact that the right kick wax will give you. If you aren't very experienced, focus your energy on the kick waxing process.
