Roller skates - also known as quad skates
Many consider roller skates to be the original skates. They are also sometimes referred to as quad skates. They are characterised by having 2 wheels in the front and 2 wheels in the back, mounted in pairs like the wheels on a skateboard. Furthermore, there is a toe stop in the front of the roller skate which can also be used as a brake pad.
Quad roller skates were the first skates on the market and they were very popular before the breakthrough of inline skates. Then came a period where inline skates dominated the market. But in recent years, quad skates have gained increased popularity, likely because of their vintage design. That very design is also the reason why they are known as retro roller skates.
Many parents and grandparents can probably remember the old quad roller skates that could be buckled on a pair of shoes. These retro roller skates are not a new invention but can be dated back to the late 1700's. Since attempts to reinvent the traditional roller skates have been made. The results include the "Blade-and-walk" roller skate by Powerslide. It looks like a normal inline skate but consists of a normal shoe in a shell.
Why choose quad roller skates?
There is a nostalgic feel to roller skates. Many people have used them in their childhood and therefore, they also prefer them as adults – both because of the well-known skating technique, but also because some of the models have retro patterns and colours.
Because of the position of the wheels, quad skates provide high stability at low speeds and when you stand still. On the other hand, they are not quite as fast as inline skates. Some rollerskates are suitable for work-out purposes while others are apt for shorter trips as well as disco and dancing. Choose the roller skates suitable for the purpose you need.
Some roller skates look like classic ice skates with a high lace-up boot while others have a sneaker-like design. Many adult roller skates have a low boot which provides greater flexibility but at the same time also less support. However, they become more manoeuvrable.

Which size should I choose in adult roller skates?
When choosing the size of the quad skates, it is important that the skates fit your feet. You should be able to move your feet a bit inside the boot. There should always be about 0.5-1cm extra room for your toes. The boot should be snug all-around your foot, from heel to the sides and across the instep without compromising the comfort. Furthermore, you should always read the size guide which you can find on each product page.
