A BMX bike headset is a crucial component that connects the fork to the bike frame and allows the handlebar to rotate. The main elements are the BMX headset bearings, though the parts can vary based on the type of BMX headset you choose. Integrated headsets are the most prevalent nowadays, but there are also many excellent non-integrated headsets available.
What Size BMX Headset Do I Need?
The standard size for a BMX headset is 1 ⅛ inches, matching the diameter of the fork steerer tube. Some models offer a tapered option combining 1⅛ and 1½ inches caps, and there are race BMX bikes and youth BMX bikes with a smaller headset tube of 1 inch.
Other common components include the BMX headset spacers that can adjust the stack height and the C rings that help center the fork in the headtube.
BMX Integrated Headsets VS Non-Integrated Headsets
Integrated headsets have become the preferred choice for both race and freestyle BMX riders. They are named this way because the sealed bearings are placed directly into the headtube of the frame. This type of headset is very easy to install and has a sleek appearance.
Non-integrated headsets, also known as standard headsets, have separate cups that are pressed into the headtube to house the bearings. This type usually has unsealed bearings, resulting in less friction when the handlebar spins.
Give the BMX Headset a Good Grease
When replacing the headsets, we recommend applying a generous amount of grease to your new parts. Greasing the headset ensures that all components are easier to maintain, clean, and replace.
