What Should I Know About BMX Brakes?
Brakes are increasingly used by freestyle riders to provide more control while riding. Having a brake not only ensures safety but also aids in mastering new tricks. To maintain your BMX brake parts in top condition, regular maintenance and occasional replacement are essential.
BMX Brake Pads
BMX brake pads, also known as brake shoes or brake blocks, are crucial for stopping your wheels. They are an integral part of your braking system, offering the friction needed to slow down or stop your wheels.
All brake pads will eventually wear down and need replacement. Most brake pads are designed to be compatible with all types of rim brakes and feature simple one-piece designs.
While most brake pads are threaded, always verify if you need threaded or non-threaded pads before purchasing.
BMX Brake Cables
Similar to pads, BMX brake cables wear out over time and require replacement. Most BMX bikes feature a single rear U-brake with a standard 1.5mm inner wire and full-length outer. BMX brake cables can be either linear or helical. Linear cables, being straight pieces of wire, are most popular among BMX riders, whereas helical cables are tightly wound spirals of wire.
If you use a Gyro brake system, you will need two cables—the upper and lower. Gyro cables are easy to install and can often be adjusted to different lengths.
