BMX Race Chainrings Give You the Speed You Need
Getting a good start is everything in BMX racing and it’s vital that you can accelerate fast and take the lead ahead of the first corner. Important to generating this acceleration is the chainring, also referred to as a sprocket. Just like with regular bikes, BMX bikes will have a front chainring where the pedals are and then a rear sprocket by the rear hub.
The BMX chainrings used by racers are usually made from light materials like aluminium so they can save as much weight as possible.
Getting the Right BMX Gearing
As you will know, BMX bikes are single-speed, meaning that the only way to change how it feels to pedal is by changing the type of sprockets you have. Therefore, the most important thing to consider is the number of teeth on the chainring and the rear sprocket. The number of teeth on the BMX sprocket determines how fast the bike accelerates and also how much power you can transfer when riding at high speeds. A sprocket often includes the number of teeth it has in the product name or description, for example, 38T, 40T or 44T. This is referred to as the gear ratio.
To calculate the gear ratio, take the number of teeth on the race BMX sprocket, and divide it by the number of teeth on your freewheel. If you want to find the gear size, you multiply the result with the diameter of the BMX wheels. What ratio you want to ride with is up to you, but nowadays many riders opt for 44/16.
